- What mental health services does Cohoba provide?
- As a BIPOC and woman-led LGBTQIA+ positive organization, Cohoba’s mental health team of three licensed clinical social workers (Who We Are) serves various populations in both individual and group formats. We practice trauma-informed therapy with training in a variety of modalities including strengths-based, person-in-environment, and systems theories.
- What do Cohoba’s bodyworkers do?
- Cohoba’s clinical bodyworkers understand the importance of the mind-body connection and how physical relaxation and mental wellness mutually contribute to one another. We offer massage services both as stand alone sessions, or complementary to the mental health services available.
- What is Psychedelic therapy?
- Psychedelics can be powerful tools for introspection, self awareness, and healing. However, when these substances are used without care, the resulting experiences can be unpredictable, distressing, and even traumatic. By integrating psychedelics into talk therapy, we are able to help set goals and expectations, provide harm reduction strategies, and guide individuals through the long process of processing and learning from these intense but rewarding experiences.
- Can Cohoba provide me with psychedelics?
- NO. Although the FDA has designated substances like psilocybin, MDMA, and ketamine as “Breakthrough Therapies,” their regulation for clinical integration remains a work-in-progress, and we are not able to prescribe them.
- Are Cohoba staff shamans? Can you recommend a shaman?
- NO. Cohoba is not affiliated with any specific religious or spiritual community. The members of our mental health team have been enrolled in and follow the best practices of the Multidisciplinary Association for Psychedelic Studies (MAPS) MDMA Therapy Training Program. It is that clinical program’s core philosophy that every person has within them an intrinsic wisdom and ability to heal, and that this inner healing wisdom blossoms naturally in an environment of safety and support. While we take inspiration from the traditions and practices of our indigenous ancestors in creating that environment, we believe that this philosophy is incompatible with charismatic leadership.
